For the data sets (from the above four) which are this type of data, examine the shape of the
distribution.
• Describe the shape of the distribution using the vocabulary in the unit.
• What do you predict about the relationship between the mean and median, given the shape of the
distribution? Will they be very close together, or will one be significantly larger, and why?
• What do you predict about the standard deviation? Will it be relatively large, or relatively small, and
why?
Compute the mean, median, and standard deviation of each data set for which it is appropriate. (You
can use technology for the mean and standard deviation, but please find the median without
technology and explain how you do so.)
Describe how the results are related to the shape of the distribution. Which measures communicate
more information about each set of data?
Find the interquartile range for the data sets for which it is appropriate.
