In our body, the movements of different parts of the body are done through a specific system of levers that comprise the skeletal muscles and the associated bones. In a lever system, the muscle that is attached to the bone is responsible for providing a force that moves the bone. As the muscle undergoes contraction and relaxation, the bones rotate around a joint in the skeletal system. By recording the EMG or electromyogram activity, one becomes capable of knowing if a particular muscle is involved in a movement or not. When we talk about agonist and antagonist muscles, they define a pair of muscles in which one contracts and the other muscle relaxes or lengthens. In this pair, the agonist's muscles are called the prime movers. Also moving the hand away from the body is extension while towards the body is flexion For example, when you move your hand away from you, your triceps muscles are the agonists as they allow you to extend your arm whereas your biceps are antagonists, which contract to extend your arm. The EMG activity that tells us about the muscle force shows that the EMG activity of extensors is high during extension. As the EMG activation increases so are the individual muscle activity.
