Metamorphic Rocks are rocks that have changed due to changes in temperature and pressure in the environment. They are among the strongest Earth materials in the crust. As the temperature and/or pressure surrounding these rocks change, so do the mineral assemblages in the rocks themselves. Certain minerals recrystallize and restructure, other minerals cannot deal with the changes emplaced on them so they melt. Any rock on Earth may serve as a protolith, that is, whatever it was befo changes took place. Igneous and Sedimentary rocks may be protoliths, and even preexisting metamorphic rocks can be changed to a higher degree or grade of metamorphism. There are two major types of metamorphism. Define each one. 1. Contact Metamorphism: 2. Regional Metamorphism:
