List three species of Betaproteobacteria that are known to be
human pathogens.
Introduction
Proteobacteria is the separate phylum of gram negative bacteria which contain purple bacteria and their relatives. It includes many bacteria that are part of human gut microbiota as well as various pathogens.
The Proteobacteria are further classified into five classes:
- Alpha proteobacteria
- Beta proteobacteria
- Gamma proteobacteria
- Delta proteobacteria
- Epsilon proteobacteria
Alpha proteobacteria are the oligotrophs can live in low nutrient environment. They are obligate intracellular pathogens. Example are: Rickettsia prowazekii, R. typhi, Agrobacterium tumifaciens etc.
Beta proteobacteria are the eutrophs which means they require copious (abundant) amount of nutrients to survive. They can survive in both the aerobic as well anaerobic environment. Some species are pathogenic to humans.
