The intestinal infection by the bacterial pathogen Vibrio cholerae causes the disease cholera. The majority of cholera infected individuals exhibit mild diarrhea or are asymptomatic. In a minority of cases, 5 to 10%, infected individuals develop severe symptoms like watery diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms appear 6 hours to 5 days after exposure to the bacteria. The loss of a large amount of fluid due to watery diarrhea leads to severe dehydration. If not treated appropriately, the affected individual can die within a few hours.
The consumption of contaminated food and water and lead to cholera infection. The improperly cooked or raw seafood, raw vegetable and fruits, and food items contaminated during storage or preparation can serve as the source of cholera infection. The primary source of contamination is the feces of an infected individual, therefore contamination of drinking water with sewage water can pose a risk. The bacteria are also found naturally in the coastal water and brackish rivers.
