Gram staining is a staining procedure in which bacteria are classified according to the colour of the stain. Accordingly the bacteria are classified into two types gram positive and Gram Negative bacteria. Gram Positive retains their original purple or blue colour when they were stained with iodine solution. On the other hand, Gram Negative bacteria finally turns to pink or red in colour when they were decolorized after adding iodine solution and finally when safranin was added to them.
