Expert Solution
Step 1

An enzyme is a molecule that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself being changed in the overall process. All cellular processes are mediated by enzymes. Enzymes have special properties that make them unique. Enzymes lower the activation energy. The binding energy released due to the interaction between the enzymes and the substrate lowers the activation energy. Only the correct substrate can form the maximum interactions with the enzyme and thus maximize the binding energy. The full complement of such interactions is formed only when the substrate is converted into the transition state. Thus, the maximal binding energy is released when the enzyme facilitates the formation of the transition state. The transition state is the point of highest free energy, in which reactants are partially converted into products.
