In today's world, businesses and organizations rely heavily on effective communication in order to be successful. In order for a company to thrive, that company must be able to relay vital information not only to its stakeholders, but to its employees as well. Must of this communication is done via electronic communication such as email, text, IMs, etc. Although these mediums often offer the most efficiency in regards to costs and time constraints, they do not come without its flaws. One major drawback to electronic communication is the lack of nonverbal cues it creates. We often overlook it, but we generally receive the majority of our information through nonverbal cues. Whether it be a certain look, expression, or general body language, we can gain a lot of information from what a person does not say. This can become a problem when we rely solely on electronic communication. One of the main purposes of communication is to convey and reciprocate intent. Without this nonverbal feedback, many times the recipient of a message can mistake a sender's message to mean something else entirely. Because of this, it is especially important to monitor wording and writing style so that our intent is not lost. Emails that are emotional in nature can oftentimes be interpreted as unfriendly, judgmental, or hostile despite what the sender may have intended. To avoid this potential disadvantage of electronic communication, it is important to refrain from sending messages while in a highly emotional state. Misinterpretations can also be avoid if we take the time to carefully review our messages before hitting send. Although we all know that electronic communication such as text and email are vital in today's business world, we must exercise due caution when using these mediums so that the meaning of our messages are not lost due to the lack of nonverbal cues.
