Expert Solution
Step 1

Epistasis is a phenomenon in which the expression of one gene is dependent on the presence or absence of one or more other genes. In this case, the phenotypic ratios deviate because of the interaction of the two or more genes to express a phenotype. (Gene-gene interaction/non-allelic interaction)

In the case of epistasis, one gene mask the effect of another gene. The characters that are expressed due to the interaction of more than one gene because of which different phenotypic expression have been observed. This is considered as an exception to Mendel's law of inheritance.

The gene that suppresses the expression of the non-allelic gene is known as the epistatic gene and the gene which gets suppressed is known as the hypostatic gene. There are chances that both non-allelic genes may be mutually epistatic to each other.
