In a short paragraph, discuss what the difference between the intrinsic properties of a rock are and the extrinsic properties of a rock mass. Discuss how each influences the engineering behavior of a rock mass.
Differences between the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of rocks are as follows
Intrinsic properties of rock include the influence of the parent mineral which contributes to its formation, the texture it develops, the composition it acquires. Further with the Civil Engineers perspective, the Intrinsic properties of rock include stiffness, strength, permeability, and foliation. these properties are the ones that govern the rock's resistance to weathering and its appearance as a geological formation.
Whereas, the extrinsic properties of rocks include the folds, faults, discontinuities, and joints. These properties govern the physical performance depending on the type of loading the rock mass experiences. Further, the extrinsic properties govern the performance characteristics of the rock mass against the loads acting on them through the foundations and other building contacts.
