How lack-of-control theory related to unipolar depression ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by symptoms such as persistent low mood and loss of interest in day-to-day activities, which can cause impairment in a healthy lifestyle of a person. It has become very common in recent times; it is a serious medical illness which requires medical attention and therapies as treatment. Learned helplessness and the belief that a person has no control over his life or bad situations can become a cause for Depression.

Step 2

The behavioral approach gave the explanation of learned helplessness as an underlying cause of depression. Learned helplessness and the belief that a person has no control over his life or bad situations can become a cause for Depression. Martin Seligman introduced the concept of learned helplessness and how it is associated with depression, with his research experiments in the year 1967. He conducted the experiments on three groups of dogs. Each group was given different treatments. The findings of the experiment suggested that the group of dogs who were exhibited to an aversive stimulus which they were unable to escape from, as the control to pull the liver was with the dogs of the second group, made them acquire a state of helplessness.
