With the onset of the 19th century, the United States began to expand westwards. It began with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. As a result of the Louisiana Purchase, the US territory doubled. It was followed by the War of 1812 which helped it to secure Ohio and upper Mississippi. The Munroe Doctrine, the Mexican-American War, and the Gold Rush, followed by the Homestead Act during the Civil War helped further westward expansion.
