Reconstruction was a great achievement because it regained the United States as a unified nation: by 1877, all of the former Confederate states had formulated new constitutions, recognized the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, and vowed their commitment to the United States government. Reconstruction also ended the long-running conflict between states' rights and federalism, which had raged since the 1790s.
