Expert Solution

Step 1Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator. It is generally prescribed to patients suffering from
cardiovascular diseases.
- When the patient is suffering from chest pain or angina pictoris, Nitoglycerin is given as it dilates the arteries, causing thinning of the blood.
- It comes under the category of nitrates drugs. Nitroglycerin releases No gas as its metabolite which activates cGMP.
- It is not advisable to use Nitoglycerin on daily basis or frequently as it causes Nitrate tolerance inside the body due to which released NO will cause hemoglobin disorder called methemoglobinemia in which there is less binding of oxygen in hemoglobin due to altered Ferrous ions.
- Higher doses of Nitroglycerin causes Intestinal failure or Ischemia as Nitroglycerin is absorbed mainly by gastrointestinal tract.
- Nitroglycerin causes formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which causes pores or holes in intestinal epithelium causing its contraction and hence less blood supply to the intestine.
