Why were they weaknesses?
A. States had competing trade agreements with other states and foreign governments; this
seriously limited the flow of trade, which then cut down on revenue coming in -> the
economic depression deepens
B. Congress was serving the interests of the STATES and not the people, or nation as a
whole
C. This was not a fair representation for the interests of large states because the small states
had the advantage - during a vote they could cancel out what the delegation of large
states may want as they were outnumbered
D. With no unified central authority to control the competing interests of the states, each
state carried on in the pursuit of its own interests; this led to infighting and instability
politically and economically
E. With no enforcement powers, Congress was unable to exert authority over the states to
follow national laws, and those laws were ignored as a result
F. It was virtually impossible to make the necessary changes to the government and fix the
problems that resulted from all the weaknesses in the Articles
G. The government couldn't pay off its war debts, it had limited funds to conduct its national
business and it lost standing with other nations financially -> this contributes to the
economic depression
H. This made trade difficult between the states and foreign governments as multiple
currencies ha to be exchanged -> this lessened the flow of trade -> which contributed to
