If a 13 kg box sits on a 13 degree hill, and a 299 N force pulls uphill. Calculate the
net force on the box.
• Let the positive direction be uphill.
• Realize there are two forces that will cause the box to move - the uphill force
and the downhill pull
• Draw a box with these two forces acting on it
• Add the two forces, one uphill (positive) and one downhill (negative) to get the
net force
• A positive answer means the box has more force uphill and a negative answer
means there is more force in the downhill direction
