Dyes or stains , are organic compounds that gives specimens a distinct coloration . Dyes contains a dissolved salt which have a positive and negative ionic charge . Acidic and the basic dyes are primarily used in bacteriologic work .

Acidic dyes -tthey have a net negative charge ( anion ) and binds to components of the cells and tissues that are positively charged . The components dyed with the acid dyes are called acidophilic. The acidic dues are highly water soluble and have better light fastness than the basic dyes . The cellular components that are basic in nature eg: cytoplasm are stained by acid dyes. Such constituents are said to be acidophilic.

Example - eosine , acid fuschin, rose Bengal , congo red , India ink .
