Question

Further predict the sign of change in entropy with proper explanation for the following cases.
(i) Isothermal compression of a perfect gas
(ii) Cleaning a dusty room

Expert Solution
Introduction:

The extent of disturbance/randomness created by all molecules within a system is recognized as "entropy". It is linked with several factors such as temperature (increases with T), mass (decreases with mass) and energy (increases with energy).

Solution:

Part (i):

During compression, the gaseous particles occupy lesser volume and come closer. This tend to decrease the randomness of these particles.

Hence, entropy is getting decreased in the process.

Thus, the sign of entropy change is negative.

Part (ii):

On cleaning room, the number of dust particles gets reduced and therefore, disorderness will also get lowered.

Hence, entropy is getting reduced in the process.

Thus, the sign of entropy change is negative.
