Physics homework question answer, step 1, image 1

A cut-in voltage of

Si=0.7 VGe=0.3 V

Assume all diode's are open.

Then there is no path for the current to flow.

Consider D1 is closed with a drop of 0.7 V.

Now,

VD2=0.7 V

VD3=0.3 V

Therefore,

VD3<VD2

Thus, Ge diode D3 conducts first leaving D2 in non-conducting state.

The result is as given below in circuit diagram.

Physics homework question answer, step 1, image 2

Here, D1 and D3 are conducting and D2  is cut-off.

Therefore,

ID1=VS-VD2-VD3RARB+RC=9 V-0.7 V-0.3 V6 kΩ3 kΩ+4 kΩ=8 V6 kΩ

ID1=1.333 mA

Here, only D3 conducts and D2 does not because D3 cut-in voltage is 0.3 V after which it does not allow the voltage across D2 to increases more than 0.3 V due to which 0.7 V is never reached across D2 and it is cut off but D1 and D3 are conducting.
