Expert Solution
Step 1

How thermodynamically stable a metal complex is formed depends on the properties of the metal ions, ligands, and the bond formed between them. A metal-ligand interaction is a type of Lewis acid-base interaction.

Firstly, Lewis bases are classified as-

1) Hard bases - They have small, highly electronegative, and nonpolarizable donor atoms (like N, O, and F).

2) Soft bases- They have larger, intermediate electronegative, and polarizable donor atoms (like P, S, and Cl).

And Lewis acids are classified as-

1) Hard acids - They are cations of electropositive metals, small, non-polarizable, have a higher charge-to-radius ratio, and have vacant orbitals.

2) Soft acids- They are cations of less electropositive metals, larger, highly polarizable, have a lower charge-to-radius ratio, and have completely filled orbitals.

But some acids are also borderline which shows the intermediate properties of hard and soft acids. They prefer soft bases.
