Focused on Success: The Right Fit—Christine’s Work Pays Off   After discussing her options with Mrs. Cook, Christine decided to switch her program of study from Medical Assisting to Medical Coding and Billing. Coding and Billing was Mrs. Cook’s recommendation, and Christine realized that it was the perfect career for her. Christine’s career mission was to work with people in a medical environment. By doing Medical Coding and Billing, she could fulfill her mission and achieve the earning targets she had set for herself. Just before graduation, Christine spoke to Dr. Nelson about her future plans. Christine was an excellent employee, and Dr. Nelson was more than happy to meet with her. Christine explained how she had been taking classes to prepare for a Medical Coding and Billing career, and that she would graduate soon. She said she was sad to leave his office since she had made close friendships with the other employees, but at the same time she was excited about her future. After telling Dr. Nelson her plans to look for a new career, she handed her written two weeks’ notice to him.   Dr. Nelson was impressed with Christine’s professionalism. He had experienced a few occasions over the past years where employees had quit without notice, or just stopped showing up without explanation. He was also impressed with Christine’s capacity to learn quickly, and her ability to succeed in school even while working.   “Thank you for being so up-front and professional,” began Dr. Nelson. “You have been a great employee, and I fully understand why you are making the career change. I can tell you have put time into your decision, and that you have worked hard in school to learn the skills you will need for your new career path.”   Christine was elated at Dr. Nelson’s praise. She had been nervous about the meeting and afraid he was going to be annoyed or even angry at her decision to leave.   Dr. Nelson surprised Christine even further. “As a matter of fact,” he said, “since my practice has been expanding, I have decided to open up another office. I will need to hire additional Coding and Billing specialists to help with the workload. Would you be interested in staying with my practice?”   Christine could hardly contain her smile, but she tried to stay calm. Her hard work had paid off and she had accomplished her goal of creating a new career path for herself. She hadn’t even considered asking about a Coding and Billing position with Dr. Nelson’s office. She had just assumed all of the needed positions were filled.
