The endocrine system commands and coordinates the complex actions of the body by secreting chemical substances called hormones into the bloodstream. These hormones are secreted by a diversity of glands that regulate various organs of the body and essential for growth, metabolism, reproduction, development, cognitive activities etcetera. The major endocrine glands of the body include the pituitary, thymus, pineal, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, testes, and ovaries. Hormones can be classified into three principal classes which are amines(simple molecules), proteins, and peptides(chains of amino acids), and steroids(derived from cholesterol).
