Experimentation Summary This section will guide you through competency-building exercises. You will be challenged with applying the knowledge you gained in the Exploration to complete the activities successfully. Learning Objectives Model the movements of tectonic plates. Materials Read through the procedures listed in the exercises on the next pages before beginning. Then, gather all of the materials listed below and begin the Exercise Modeling Plate Tectonics. Note: The packaging and/or materials in your kit may differ slightly in appearance from images in the experimental procedures. Student Supplied Camera Scissors Lab Kit Supplied Modeling clay Transparency film Exercise Modeling Plate Tectonics - In this exercise, you will construct a model of tectonic plates and then observe surface deformations caused by plate movements. Procedure Gather the modeling clay, transparency paper, scissors, and a digital camera or smartphone. Using the scissors, cut the transparency paper in half. Overlap the two pieces of transparency paper by 2 inches and place on a smooth, flat surface. Remove the modeling clay from the container and roll into a ball. Place the ball of clay in the center of the transparency sheet and press it flat until it is 1/4 inch thick. Press the clay firmly, ensuring that it fully adheres to the transparency paper. See Figure 11.

Exercise Modeling Plate Tectonics
-
In this exercise, you will construct a model of tectonic plates and then
observe surface deformations caused by plate movements.
Procedure
Gather the modeling clay, transparency paper, scissors, and a digital
camera or smartphone.
Using the scissors, cut the transparency paper in half.
Overlap the two pieces of transparency paper by 2 inches and place
on a smooth, flat surface.
Remove the modeling clay from the container and roll into a ball.
Place the ball of clay in the center of the transparency sheet and
press it flat until it is 1/4 inch thick. Press the clay firmly, ensuring that
it fully adheres to the transparency paper. See Figure 11.
