Expert Solution
Step 1
  • The heart has two separate pumps where the blood flows in a unidirectional aspect from the right side of the heart to the lung for the process of gas exchange and then it returns to the left portion of the heart from which the blood is pumped to the systemic circulation for delivery to problems.
  • Each heartbeat initiates with electrical activation of the atria then the activation of the ventricles. The ventricular contraction and ejection take place at the time of systole. The starting of the systole corresponds with the first heart sound and terminates with the second heart sound.
  • Ventricle relaxation as well as filling take place at the time of diastole which initiates with the second heart sound and terminates with the first heart sound.
  • The blood volume ejected with each heartbeat is called the stroke volume and the sum of the stroke volumes that are ejected per minute is referred to as the cardiac output (CO).
