Question
Draw the structures for the major monobromination products that would be formed from each of the substrates used.
In separate labeled (a to f) test tubes, place 1.0 mL of a 0.2 M stock solution of each of the
following substrates in 15 M (90%) acetic acid: a) phenol, b) anisole, c) diphenyl ether, d)
acetanilide, e) 4-bromophenol, and f) 1-naphthol. Don't mix the pipets, any contamination will
affect your results greatly.
Add about 500 mL of deionized water to a 1-L beaker and heat water to 35°C +2 °C. Suspend
the test tubes in the water bath by looping a piece of copper wire around the neck of the test
tube and over the rim of the beaker. Transfer about 25 mL of a solution containing 0.05 M
bromine in 15 M acetic acid to an Erlenmeyer flask, and equilibrate this solution in the water
bath for a few minutes.

Add 1.0 mL of the bromine solution to a test tube containing one of the substrates. Make the
addition rapidly, mix the solution quickly, and record the exact time of addition. Monitor the
reaction mixture and note the elapsed time for the bromine color to become faint yellow or to
disappear. If decoloration has not occurred within 5 minutes, which can happen because some
substrate reacts slowly, proceed to a second substrate while waiting for the endpoint of the
first one to be reached. Record the reaction time. Repeat this procedure for each of the arenes.
