Question

Disdis -how do RB and p53 negatively regulate the cell cycle in G1?

describe the events that occur in the initiation and elongation of DNA replication in S phase.

Expert Solution
Step 1

A series of events which takes place in a cell due to which it divides and forms two daughter cells is known as cell cycle. Cell cycle is also referred to as cell division cycle as single cell divides and forms daughter cells. This cycle involves mainly two stages that is interphase and mitotic (M) phase. Interphase includes G1 phase in which cell grows, S phase in which DNA replicates and G2 phase in which the cell prepares for mitosis. M phase that is mitotic phase is in which cell undergoes mitosis a type of cell division.

Step 2

Rb that is Retinoblastoma protein is a tumor suppressor protein which prevents excess of cell growth by inhibiting the cell cycle. Rb regulates cell cycle negatively and same is done by p53 protein. Both Rb and p53 acts as checkpoints of G1 phase thus preventing the cell growth. When the DNA is damaged then this information of damaged DNA is induced by various factors like ARF. This increases the level of p53 and Rb proteins which further leads to apoptosis that is cell death or can repair DNA by recruiting the enzymes involved in DNA repair.
