He began, “Gerald, this note you sent me says I have to update descriptions for all 10 of the jobs in my department within the next two weeks." "Well, what's the problem with that?" asked Gerald. John explained, "This is a waste of time, especially because I have other deadlines. It will take at least 30 hours. We still have two weeks of work left on the internal audit reviews. You want me to push that back and work on job descriptions? No way. We haven't looked at these job descriptions in years. They will need a great deal of revision. And as soon as they get into the hands of the employees, I'll get all kinds of flack." "Why would you get flak for getting the job descriptions in order?" asked Gerald. John answered, "This whole thing is a can of worms. Just calling attention to the existence of job descriptions will give some people the idea that they don't have to do things that aren't in the description. And if we write what the people in my division really do, some jobs will have to be upgraded and others downgraded, I'll bet. I just can't afford the morale problem and the confusion right now." Gerald replied, "What do you suggest, John? 1 have been told just to get it done, and within two weeks." "I don't want to do it at all," said John, "But certainly not during the audit period.
