Early in the 19th century, a string of pogroms—anti-Jewish mob assaults—took place in the Russian Empire. The fact that Jews were only allowed to reside in specific regions of Russia made it simple for anti-Jewish mobs to organise and attack them. These attacks were frequently associated with myths, such as the notion that a nearby Jewish person had vandalised a church out of resentment over the local economy. The bloodiest pogrom, which killed 2,500 Jews in Odessa in 1905, was there. Over 2 million Jews left Russia as a result of these pogroms between 1880 and 1920.
