The muscle fibre is made up of several long cylindrical-shaped fibres ranging in diameter from 0.02 to 0.08 mm. Some muscles have fibres that span the full length of the muscle, reaching lengths of many tens of centimetres. In others, a tendon runs down each border of the muscle, and the fibres run diagonally across the muscle between the tendons. There is significant variety across the many skeletal muscles, with the exact arrangement of the fibres dependent on the function of the muscle.
