Differentiate between steel and GFRP in terms of there properties? Also find the usage of GFRP in RC structures around the world at the moment, throughly.

Expert Solution
Step 1 Differentiate between steel and GFRP in terms of properties:

Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP), commonly known as fiber glass, is a synthetic amalgamated material, made up of plastic and extremely fine fibers of glass. From past few decades, the demand of GFRP has increased due to its properties which are good for reinforced concrete structures. The reason behind higher demand of GFR in RC structures as compared to traditional steel reinforcement  can be understood by comparing the properties of steel and GFRP as follows:

  • Corrosion: Being a corrosion resistive material, GFRP is more appropriate alternate solution in the areas where chemical attacks and deterioration of the RCC are of major concerns. So, corrosion is the major property which differentiates conventional steel bars with GFRP. The rust causes cracking, spalling and delamination of RCC, whereas GFRP eliminates all this problem of RCC.
  • Toughness: No doubt, steel is good in ductility, but recent studies show that the failure mode of GFRP enriched concrete specimens show higher degree of toughness as compared to steel, which indicates that GFRP not only eliminates the corrosion problem but also capable of providing toughness to the structure.
  • Tensile strength: Again, the plethora of studies have been taken place regarding the mechanical properties of GFRP enriched concrete and it has been observed from the studies that the tensile strength of GFRP bars are usually higher as compared to the steel bars because GFRP are anisotropic composite materials, which attain yield tensile strength higher than the steel bars.
  • Thermal expansion: GFRP has good control over thermal expansion and hence, good fire resistance as compared to steel bars which has comparatively higher values of coefficient of thermal expansion.
  • Light weight: GFRP materials are lighter in weight as compared to steel due to its fibrous origins and hence, easy handling, transportation and placement of GFRP as a reinforcing bar in concrete structures.
