Figure Q1 shows a steel rod that consist of three segments. Segment AB and CD are
solid homogenous material with 20 mm and 16 mm diameter, respectively. On the
other hand, segment BC is a hollow section with an inner radius of 8 mm and an outer
radius of 15 mm. Given the following data:
Yield strength, f,= 378 N/mm²
Yield strain, &, = 1.909x10³ mm/mm

Determine the normal stress on each segment of the steel rod. Assume the
reaction force is 1.33FD.
Check whether the end D of the steel rod has contact with the wall. Consider
the gap between the steel rod and wall is 10 mm.
(iii)
If the steel rod is subjected to the temperature of 180°C, describe THREE (3)
consequents on the normal stress.
