**Colony Morphology on TSA Plate**

| Colonies | *S. saprophyticus* | *S. marcescens* |
|----------------|-------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
| **Size** | Thin layer with moderate growth | Thick layer with no growth |
| **Color** | White creamy color | Red |
| **Elevation** | Raised elevation | Smooth convex |

This table describes the colony morphology of *S. saprophyticus* and *S. marcescens* cultured on a TSA (Tryptic Soy Agar) plate. It covers the size, color, and elevation of the bacterial colonies.

Expert Solution
Step 1: Explaining the basis of Gram staining

On the basis of the staining procedure called Gram staining, bacteria can be classified as gram positive or Gram Negative.

The staining procedure is based on the differences in the cell wall composition of both types of bacteria. For example Gram Positive bacteria have high content of peptidoglycan and low content of lipids where as Gram negative bacteria have low content of peptidolycan and high content of lipids in their cell walls.
