Nakkas Osman was an Ottoman miniature painter, whose work is documented in Istanbul
between 1560 and 1592. He was considered the official miniaturist of the Ottoman court.
Although little is known about his biography, his work is dated to the second half of the 16th
century. Selim I is also known as Selim the Grim or Selim the Resolute. During Selim's reign,
the Ottoman Empire conquered lands in the Middle East, and some consider him the first
Ottoman caliph. Known for his temper and his high expectations as well as his relatively short
but successful rule, it is said that Selim I had several viziers (high officials) killed
displeased him.
