Describe some of the advantages of polyploid plants. What are the
consequences of having an odd number of chromosome sets?
Polyploid plants arise due to rare meiotic and mitotic crisis formin gametes that are capable of possessing more than two complete sets of chromosomes. Polyploids are divided into different categories based on composition and manner of formation of polyploidy. Major subdivisions are autopolyploids(same type and same origin of more than one set of chromosomes) and allopolyploids(different origin as well as different types).
Chromosome set changes can be of two types one where the whole set of the chromosome is changed while the other one is where only a part of the chromosomal set is changed.
Most polyploids have even number of chromosomal sets most commonly four(tetraploidy) while odd numbers of the chromosomal set is also a case.
