Transatlantic slavery existed prior to the arrival of slavery in America. The imperial powers of Portugal and Spain who commonly traded with Asia and Africa were the first to begin the system of slavery. African communities already had a form of slavery that was practiced within them. These imperial powers used this as a way to acquire free labor and profits by selling them.
