Jean Piaget is a cognitive theorist who perceived children as constructor or discoverer, as he believed children are virtually constructing all understanding regarding their world through their own behaviors or actions.
Piaget and his colleagues carried out research on cognitive development. He studied developmental process of understanding knowledge and how a child's mind work. According to Piaget, cognitive development advances through an systematic and orderly sequence of stages.
Piaget divided the stages of cognitive development in the following ways :
1) Sensorimotor stage (Birth to 2 years )
2) Preoperational stage (2 to 7 years)
3) Concrete operational stage (7 to 11 years )
4) Formal operational stage (11 years and beyond )
