Declaration of Independence: Unless you’re a history geek or a law fiend, you likely haven’t read the Declaration of Independence as a literary document, but it’s just as rich and motivational and powerful as many of the pieces we’ll read this semester. Find a part of the Declaration that you had not paid much attention to before reading it as a piece of literature, and discuss what implications it has for your reading of the document. For example, what do you make of the fact that signing this document was an act of treason? What do you make of the language? How much more gutsy do you think these men were now that you’ve read the document in full?
