The United States wanted to encourage democracy and free markets and the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism. The Cold War took place in different parts of the world which were Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The two supported opposing sides in disagreements like the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Afghan War. They also hurried to build up large stockpiles of nuclear weapons to prevent the other countries from using them. The Cold War ended when the Soviet Union fell down in 1991 which was the end of communism as an international force. After the Cold War the United States became the world's only country which was able to challenge its rivals.
