a. Gene is a short nucleotide sequence that codes for a
particular trait while different variants or forms of a
gene are known as alleles. For instance, a gene at a
specific locus codes for fur color in rabbits while
variation in the fur color (full color, chinchilla,
Himalayan, and albino) is attributed to presence of four
different types of alleles (C, cch, ch, c).
b. Dominant traits (mask the effect of recessive allele)
are expressed when the an individual has either
homozygous dominant or heterozygous genotype while
recessive traits are expressed when the genotype is
homozygous recessive. For instance, widow's peak in
humans is a dominant trait while straight hairline is a
recessive trait (that is, 'WW' or 'Ww' codes for widow's
peak while 'ww' codes for straight hairline).
c. Genotype is defined as the genetic makeup while
the physical
phenotype
is
morphological
or
characteristic of a plant or organism. For instance, 'TT'
or 'Tt' codes for tall plants while 'tt' codes for dwarf or
short plants. Here 'TT' and 'Tt' is the genotype while
plant height (tall or dwarf) is the phenotype.
