Transcribed Image Text:Geologists, through various methods of rock-dating (mostly radiometric methods) and
data extrapolation, have determined that our planet was formed approximately 4.55
BILLION years ago. To us as humans, numbers like "million" or "billion" don't really
compute; for the most part, the numbers that we encounter in our day-to-day don't really
go that high. There's 60 seconds in a minute; 60 minutes in an hour; 24 hours in a day;
365 days in a year. Even the longest-living humans don't make it too far past 100 years.
In general, when we think of numbers like "million" or "billion", we just mash them
together in a category we call "a lot" and leave it at that.
For example, I can tell you that the following photo is of a mineral crystal (a zircon) that's
4.375 billion years old:
Don't worry about the blue (it's not that color, it's just imaged using a technique called
cathodoluminescence, which helps us see the "layers"); the thing to see is that it has
many layers, each of which might have only taken hours, days, or weeks to form. But the

Expert Solution

Step 1: Introduction
The age of our Earth is 4.5 billion years. Radiometric dating shows that our Earth was formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago. The age of the Earth calculated from the dating of zircon minerals is 4.5 billion years.
For human beings the numbers are really too big as human beings live to 100 years.
We have 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in a hours 24 hours in a day and 365 days in a year.
