Consider the system of two small and equal lead masses 1 and 2 attached to a uniform stick that is 18 inches long. Each lead mass is 3 times the mass of the stick. The questions below refer to the moment of inertia of this system about an axis pointing out of the screen through the white dot as shown in the picture below. The stick is divided up into 1 inch units as shown.

Question

Consider the system of two small and equal lead masses 1 and 2 attached to a uniform stick that is 18 inches long. Each lead mass is 3 times the mass of the stick. The questions below refer to the moment of inertia of this system about an axis pointing out of the screen through the white dot as shown in the picture below. The stick is divided up into 1 inch units as shown.

In this question I have to determine what happens to the moment of inertia if the weights are moved to various points along the stick. I am just not sure how to figure this out because we weren't told how to set up a problem with the weights at different points along a rod like this.

The image contains a simple linear diagram, featuring a horizontal line segmented into equal parts by vertical lines. There are dark filled circles located at two points along the line, and a larger empty circle in the center.

- The filled circle on the left is labeled with the number "1".
- The filled circle on the right is labeled with the number "2".

This type of diagram could represent a number line or basic scale used for educational purposes, such as teaching about measurement or number sequencing.
