Concern has been expressed at the local waste water treatment plant regarding the overflows caused by storm water being passed down the same pipeline. The town area main drain has to deal with a maximum of 100m3/s approximately twice a year and so it is proposed that a single drain pipe capable of taking this volume of water be collected from the main storm drains into a temporary storage reservoir to be channelled into the river. The maximum head available is 22m. The pipe is 2050m long, the Darcey Weisbach figure is 0.011, what is the minimum pipe diameter for this project

a) Concern has been expressed at the local waste water treatment plant regarding the overflows caused by storm water being passed down the same pipeline. The town area main drain has to deal with a maximum of 100m3/s approximately twice a year and so it is proposed that a single drain pipe capable of taking this volume of water be collected from the main storm drains into a temporary storage reservoir to be channelled into the river.
The maximum head available is 22m. The pipe is 2050m long, the Darcey Weisbach figure is 0.011, what is the minimum pipe diameter for this project?

b) Looking into the future with mean temperature levels exceeding 2.50C above pre-industrial levels it is considered that the maximum size of the water drain pipe would increase by 4m3/second every decade . Provide a table of expected maximum drain loads over a period from 2030 to 2130 and plot this on a graph. You are advised to plot the maximum expected rainfall against pipe diameter.

c)(i) Explain briefly how you would determine if the flow in a pipe was certain to be laminar.
(ii) Determine for each of the pipe sizes given as being suitable for the years 2023 to 2123 and show whether the flow would definitely be laminar and if not, show what minimum pipe size would be needed to ensure laminar flow and analyse the efficiency of the flow.
