Expert Solution
Step 1

To find out which molecule would absorb in the UV region, we need to know which wavelength of light is being absorbed.

We have to calculate λmax for each structure with the help of Woodward rules for conjugated alkenes.

The rules are given below:

  • For homo-annular dienes, the base value will be 253 nm.
  • For hetero-annular dienes, the base value will be 215 nm.
  • For butadiene system or cyclic conjugated diene, the base value will be 217 nm.
  • Between homo-annular and hetero-annular, the homo-annular structure will have the preference.
  • For every alkyl substituent, we have to add 5 nm.
  • For every exocyclic double bond, we need to add 5 nm.
  • For every double bond extending conjugation, we have to add 30 nm.

We will use these rules to evaluate λmax for each given molecule.

The UV range is 100 - 400 nm. Whenever the value of λmax is in between this range, we will say that the molecule will absorb in the UV range.
