Module 5 Virtual Lab: Molecular Shapes and Functional Groups
Instructions: Organic chemistry is full of new ways of representing molecules and classifying molecules. In this activity you'll get practice with
both of them. Visit www.molview.org and use the 3D visualizer there to help you fill in the following tables. You are able to draw in
the left pane (you will have to click the trash can to get rid of the example molecule) and when you click 2D to 3D your molecule will
appear in 3D in the right panel. Then you can click and rotate and manipulate the 3D structure.
Functional Group options: none, C-C double bond, C-C triple bond, halo, hydroxyl, alkoxy, amino, carbonyl, carboxyl
Compound Type options: alkane, alkene, alkyne, alcohol, alkyl halide, amine, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid
