As we all know, over the past several decades, there has been a rise in the number of immigrants entering the United States. Many of them come here for either a better life or to work as laborers. When it comes to labor, it has been a major topic in the US economy. They have played an important role in raising living standards and have taken on the responsibility of increasing output in all economic areas. After watching both the American Factory Documentary and the Sleep Dealer film, I noticed various similarities and differences in the themes featured in both films, which were worker abuse and discrimination. 

 

Worker abuse has been the most significant problem that most employees have encountered. Companies forced employees to work more hours without pay raises. This is extremely unfair to those employees who have been treated poorly by their companies while struggling in life and require more money to take care of themselves as well as their families. The similarity between the two films is that many of the working conditions are hazardous, and they can result in fainting, permanent scars, significant injuries, and even death. Once workers are injured, the corporation will remove them and find a replacement rather than providing support and assisting them in recovering.

 

As a result, many workers are forming unions because they think they deserve better than what they currently have. Although many workers wish to unionize, some are afraid to do so, especially young workers who do not want to lose their only source of income. According to the documentary American Dream, the company Fuyao despises workers who join unions. If the workers are unionized, the employer will either dismiss them on the spot or place them in situations where they are likely to make mistakes, giving the corporation an excuse to fire them. Also, in Sainato's article, "big businesses like Starbucks are opposed to unionized labor." This shows that unions are particularly hated among top companies; therefore, many large corporations are opposed to workers joining unions. The reason is that due to the union's influence on company autonomy and the resulting economic losses as employees fight for higher salaries and better benefits, If workers want to live the American Dream, "they must fight for themselves and not rely on others to fight for them," as Loomis mentioned in his articles, or else it will just benefit the rich and make them wealthier while workers would still live in stress and suffering.

 

 

Another theme that appears in both films is discrimination. Every worker, especially immigrants, wants to travel somewhere where they can work and earn more money to support their family. However, going to a different place can be difficult at times, and the language barrier and various cultures and lifestyles can be huge challenges for them. Both films have some similarities and different views on discrimination, even though they don't show much of it. In “Sleeper Dream," the US border considers Mexico a dangerous place to go, and US companies exploit migrant workers for cheap labor and reflect on the human cost of quickening globalization while not allowing them to enter the United States. While in "Factory Worker," many American workers are angry at the Chinese, furious at the fact that they have to watch Chinese movies at work, and believe that the Chinese do not respect them. 

 

These are the elements that contribute to discrimination against others. It is not permitted to discriminate against someone based on their worldview or culture. A lot of people address problems in diverse ways based on their culture; therefore, you should not discriminate against them. Furthermore, when employees are able to put their differences aside, support one another, and understand one another cultures, it brightens the working atmosphere and enhances how well workers perform. As a result, it will help improve the company's overall performance. When companies are doing well, some of them may raise employees' salaries and offer paid vacation.
