can you discuss conformity and social influence based on what happened during this famous experiment, the Standford Prison experiment?
Philip Zimbardo conducted the famous and infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. Zimbardo and his colleagues wanted to learn the impact of becoming a prisoner and a prison guard, extending the previously concluded Milgram experiment on obedience.
For this experiment, 24 male undergraduates were recruited to play the role of prisoners and prison guards. During the experiment, the prisoners remained in the mock prison all day long. Meanwhile, the prison guards worked in 3-member teams for 8 hours.
The experiment was supposed to be conducted over a course of 14 days. However, it had to be stopped by 6 days itself, as the prison guards became abusive toward the prisoners, whilst the prisoners suffered from extreme anxiety and stress.
