Humanist Carl Rogers pioneered person-centered therapy in the 1940s. In this form of treatment, also called client-centered therapy, the focus is on the potential for change in the client themselves and on identifying and changing or eliminating the obstacles to becoming a fully-functioning person, in Rogers' terminology.
The primary feature of person-centered therapy is the emphasis on unconditional positive regard, where a person is not judged based on past deeds or thoughts and is seen as a person of worth and dignity without any conditions of worth present in the therapeutic process. The therapist assumes the role of a facilitator and guide who is at an equal level as the client in the discovery process and helps them identify the factors that are holding them back from self-actualizing and living their most fulfilled life possible.
Since the therapy is person-centered, it must be as unique as the person. Person-centered therapy is curated to the client's needs and desires and takes focus away from the therapist as the expert to the client as the discoverer of their own self. This helps the client uncover the factors that are keeping them from greatness and allows them to forge their own path to fulfillment and actualization.
