The galvanic cell is an electrochemical cell that derives electrical energy from spontaneous redox reactions taking place within the cell. It consists of two metals immersed in electrolytes and connected by a salt bridge. The metal with the higher reduction potential act as cathode and the metal with lower reduction potential acts as anode. Reduction takes place at cathode and oxidation takes place at anode. In the experiment of Cu and Fe, the Cu+2 ions were reduced to Cu metal, which was then deposited as a layer on the solid Fe. The oxidation and reduction half cells are as follows:
