When Europeans colonized the Americas, one of the major things they did apart from economic exploitation was the spreading of Christianity. Europeans wanted to spread the word of god and convert the natives to the Christian faith. Spanish were the first Europeans to found colonial outposts in the Americas, and by the 17th and 18th centuries, they became one of the leading colonial powers of the Americas.
