Question

Calculate the vapor pressure (in torr) of a solution prepared by mixing 0.542 mol of toluene (92.14 g/mol) in 0.947 mol of hexane (86.2 g/mol).

P°hexane = 97.51 torr and P°tolune = 21.75 torr. Report your answer to the tenths place and do not include units.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Raoult's law :-

The vapor pressure of a component in a liquid-liquid solution is directly proportional to mole fraction of that component in solution

P1 = P1°X1

P1 = vapor pressure of component 1 in solution

P1° = vapor pressure of pure component 1

X1 = mole fraction of component 1

Similarly for second complement

P2 = P2°X2

The total pressure of solution is given by

Ptotal = P1°X1 + P2°X2
